Dear Uncle Henry, I have recently discovered Ties again. I remember wearing them at school because I was forced too and then not really thinking about them again till I took up my job in the City.

I know that ties are not required but I think that the everyone looks the same in their navy suits and white shirts. I want to stand out a bit and I think a tie would do it.  I do not have a massive budget, around £30 a tie, but would like to get a few to start with.

What do you recommend? JP, London, UK

Dear JP,

I love the question. In fact, just the other day we had some young fellow stop me and ask me where I go my Tie. I was exceptionally flattered.

The Tie had seemed to have fallen out of fashion but the PG team informs me that they have seen the stirrings of a small rise in the neck wear sales and that more men want to be seen as stylish with a lovely piece of neck wear.

A tie is a most excellent way to stand out from a crowd. Like a pair of socks or pocket square, these are little touches that show your  individuality and style.

Tie choice is very individual: it is about the shirt, the suit and the person. There are some certain no, nos for ties. Such as NO Novelty ties. One of my nephews got me one of those ridiculous Christmas Rudolph ties, It accidentally fell in the fire one day. NO Kipper Ties, unless you are attending a fancy dress party and even then, you can think of something more interesting to go as! And never ever a clip on Tie, unless you are in security and in danger of being strangled with it!

As for places to go for your ties, let me think. Well in your price range, those lovely people at T M Lewin and Charles Tyrwhitt do some great bargains. I am a big fan of Duchamp ties and though generally they are above the budget you mentioned the have a fantastic online outlet store!

There are several online stores such as, and and for our US friends Where you can find a whole range of ties at reasonable prices.

If you have a little bit more to splash out then toddle over to Augustus Hare as they have some lovely and bespoke ties but also some amazing videos.

I love a tie and it makes any suit zing. I must dig out the regimental tie…

Toodle Pip!
