Summer has arrived in London and London becomes truly special bathed in sunlight, with it’s gleaming towers set against a clear blue sky. As Mrs F-B calls it perfect postcard weather.
London is a delight, people smile, the parks look glorious (and we have a good few to visit), meals can be taken outside and life becomes somewhat Mediterranean. Well as close to the Med as a humid Thursday in July can get. But the sun makes everything better. That is until London Men get dressed, it seems that style slips away from the London males thoughts as easily as melting ice cream through fingers and ends up a sticky mess.
Bad shirts, ill fitting shorts and footwear that should only be seen on a beach come out and they don’t seem to care. I took a journey from the City to the West End that other morning at the height of rush hour and counted the number of stylish men and women that had made some sort of effort for the heat and still attempt to look the part. Out of the hundreds I passed, I counted nearly 50 women, who could have graced the pages of many a celebrity magazine or fashion paper. Of the men I barely counted 4! Four men out of hundreds that made an effort at the start of the day. I was shocked! Summer Men’s Style – we are coming to claim you and give the men of London a kick in the backside.
You ask, what was I wearing. Well I was being doubly daring and wearing a Seersucker Suit. Yes, I know it is a very bold choice, but I like it and though I had some strange looks not one of my meetings nor anyone I met mentioned it at all. Seersucker was taken on by the British in India as it was a fabulous fabric for the heat. It is probably now more famous for being an American Southern Gentleman’s summer wardrobe staple.
I like it and believe that is should make a dashing come back into the Men’s summer arsenal and like other great items you can dress it up and dress it down and yet it always makes a statement. Sometimes a Gentleman needs to be bold!
One other thing during the heat of the summer, don’t forget a dash of extra scent every now and again throughout the day keeps you smelling fresh and feeling on top shape too (and always keep the deodorant to hand too!)
Keep Mannered and Memorable,
