Affair To RememberWe thought it would be a good idea to make a series of cultural “Top 5s” for the gentleman. This is the first in the series, and today we will be focusing on film. The Perfect Gentleman team have put their thinking caps on and each assembled a list of the top 5 films that they suggest all gentlemen should see.  Here they are…

Zach Falconer-Barfield, 1st Gentleman

1. The Thin Man Series

A great witty dectective series of movies with a great couple at the center. The inspiration for Heart to Heart & many movies since…

2. School For Scoundrels

How to become a socundrel and realising that you are a Gentleman. Ian Carmichael shows us how to defeat the cad Terry Thomas

3. My Man Godfrey (either David Niven or Willaim Powell)

About a man of privelege who discovers that being a Gentleman is about more than that as he takes the role of a Bulter to a crazy and wealthy family.

4. An Affair to Remember

Considered to be the true Romantic Movie and my list would be incomplete without a Cary Grant movie – there maybe better Grant movies but this is one for the Romantic Gentleman.

5. Kate & Leopold

A true PG movie, about a Gentleman coming to the modern age and finding love, but instilling a sense of romance, manners and honour that come from yesteryear.

Sam Adam Smith, 3rd Gentleman

1. The Thomas Crown Affair – Steve Mcqueen or Pierce Brosnan

How interlect, planning and thought for others will always allow you to get ahead in life, even if in this case it is, ahem, ‘criminally’.

2. Crazy Stupid Love

How any man can become sartorially elegant? It just requires a little work and a willing teacher. Also a great film to watch with a partner.

3. Hitch

My all time favourite film and where I initally got my dating influnces from. It teaches us that it doesn’t matter who you are, you can become what you want to be, you just need some help building the courage to go out and get it. Also don’t worry about kicking your date in the face, as long as it was an accident you can always recover. Lesson: laugh together at your mishaps.

4. The Shawshank Redemption

Modern great, a heart renching tale of injustice and unfair treatment with fantastic performances by all actors in this hard prision drama.

5. Love Actually

A story about caring, love and happiness. A Christmas film with heart that has become a classic.

Tom Swanston, Media Gentleman

1. Good Will Hunting

As good as filmmaking gets, with a superb script by the film’s stars Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. An orphaned genius is forced to face his innermost fears in order to progress and have true relationships. No better reason to watch this than to see the late great Robin Williams’ oscar-wining and brilliantly touching performance as the hero’s therapist and mentor.

2. Little Miss Sunshine

A beautiful, funny and heart-warming film about a semi-disfunctional family that end up on an expected journey together, forcing them to really get to know and love each other. Will make you laugh, give you hope and want to hug your loved ones.

3. North by North West

A Hitchcock classic starring Cary Grant playing an average gentleman who has to stand up and do what it takes to make things right.

4. Happy Gilmore

Farcical comedy following an eccentric, rough and ready, wannabe ice hockey player who finds a talent for golf, the gentleman’s game. It’s a kind of thug to gentleman transformation story, with so many belly laughs you will lose count!

5. Schindler’s List

Second World War epic about a gentleman who risked everything to save as many Jewish people as possible. An incredible true story and possibly Spielberg’s finest film.
